1. Update to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs)
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted amendments to the COLREGs, which will come into force on January 1, 2024. The amendments include changes to the rules on overtaking, crossing situations, and restricted visibility.
2. New Traffic Separation Scheme in the Gulf of Mexico
The U.S. Coast Guard has established a new traffic separation scheme (TSS) in the Gulf of Mexico. The TSS is designed to improve safety and efficiency of navigation in the area.
3. Closure of the Panama Canal to Large Vessels
The Panama Canal will be closed to large vessels for maintenance from July 2 to July 12, 2023. Vessels planning to transit the canal during this time should contact the Panama Canal Authority for more information.
4. New Regulations for Ballast Water Management
The IMO has adopted regulations on ballast water management, which will come into force on September 8, 2023. The regulations are designed to prevent the spread of invasive species through ballast water.
5. New Regulations for the Use of Drones at Sea
The IMO has adopted regulations on the use of drones at sea, which will come into force on January 1, 2024. The regulations are designed to ensure the safe and orderly use of drones at sea.
